ACT with Parents and other Carers
This webinar will survey the current literature, and clinical lore, on ACT with parents (sometimes called Acceptance and Commitment Training when working with parents and other carers). We will look at the benefits of psychoeducation for parents; teaching important aspects of child bio-psycho-social development as they relate to psychological inflexibility and subsequent behaviour concerns. Through lecture, case presentation, and experiential exercises we will explore techniques for identifying, and articulating for parents, unhelpful behaviour patterns, or “dances” between parent and child. I will describe a three-stage ACT-based model that can help parents get unstuck from habitual and ineffective reactions and then orient toward pursuing valued family goals. A bibliography will be provided.
